  Patient Services - Obstetrics

Information on all aspects of medical care for the pregnant woman can be accessed through the RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Subspecialist consultant obstetrician-gynaecologists who are members of the RCSI Department have expertise in general obstetric care, high risk pregnancy management, multiple pregnancy, obstetric ultrasound, prenatal screening and diagnosis.

One of the most common concerns voiced by women once a positive pregnancy test is obtained is the question “is my baby healthy?” Unfortunately, both information and access to appropriate ultrasound scans and tests can be difficult for many pregnant women to obtain in a timely manner. Detailed information on various obstetric ultrasound, prenatal screening, and prenatal diagnosis tests that are commonly requested during pregnancy is available here. Information on various options for antenatal care is also provided.

Expertise in these subspecialist obstetric areas is maximised by being at the forefront of clinical research in this field. The RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is recognised internationally for its leadership in the area of obstetric ultrasound, prenatal screening and prenatal diagnosis. Some of the latest innovations in early pregnancy screening tests for fetal abnormalities have been advanced internationally by the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre at the Rotunda Hospital. Recent publications in the world’s leading research publications, such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, attest to this depth of expertise.

A core concept of the Department is the principle of providing personalised individual care based on each patient’s own needs, preferences and beliefs. The provision of comprehensive advanced women’s health services is based on the concept that each patient should be able to access whatever medical services are appropriate for her own medical background, age, status and beliefs, in a timely and efficient manner. One of the goals of this website is to support this concept and should empower women and their health care providers to access relevant medical information and contact details as desired. Patients are encouraged to contact the Department’s head office at the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre at the Rotunda Hospital if any additional assistance is needed.
