Patient Services - Obstetrics : Ultrasound & Prenatal Diagnosis

Welcome to the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre, based at the Rotunda Hospital. The RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre is dedicated to ensuring that patients have immediate access to the latest in medical services. This includes our new state-of-the-art prenatal diagnostic service, where patients can avail of the latest cutting-edge obstetric ultrasound and screening tests, as early as the first trimester of pregnancy. These services are provided in a confidential, private setting, in which adequate time is taken to ensure a full understanding of the wonder and joy of pregnancy. The ethos of the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre is to individualize all aspects of care for each patient, and to provide such care in a consultant-led setting.

Advanced obstetric ultrasound services are provided both for self-referred patients, as well as for those referred from other providers, including general practitioners, midwives and obstetricians. Quality assurance in the provision of obstetric ultrasound services is critical if accurate information is to be obtained from these tests and also to avoid needless anxiety from suboptimally performed procedures. A core principle of the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre is to ensure sub-specialist consultant supervision and approval of all tests and procedures. The provision of obstetric ultrasound tests by allied health professionals, without the direct supervision of physician experts in this field, is not consistent with international best practices. One of the academic missions of the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre is to address this limitation that exists in Ireland, and to ensure that all patients have access to necessary expertise.

We hope that you find this web-site useful and that it provides answers to your questions and concerns. Please feel free to contact the Department’s head office at the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre  at the Rotunda Hospital if you need any additional assistance.
