Professor Fergal Malone qualified from University College Dublin in 1991. Following initial training in surgery in Dublin he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he completed training in obstetrics and gynaecology followed by an advanced fellowship in maternal –fetal medicine, obstetric ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis. He was first appointed Consultant Obstetrician and specialist in maternal fetal medicine and obstetric ultrasound at the New England Medical Centre, Boston, in 1998. Uniquely, he is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in both Obstetrics and in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He and several colleagues moved to New York in 1999, to establish the new maternal fetal medicine and advanced obstetric ultrasound service at Columbia University / New York Presbyterian Hospital. This service was grown into one of the largest high risk obstetric programmes in the United States, specialising in advanced obstetric ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, multiple gestation management, and care of women with challenging obstetric problems.

During his time in the United States, Professor Malone was responsible for world class research developments in obstetric ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and maternal-fetal medicine. He directed the National Institutes of Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Research Network in New York, and the renowned NIH FASTER Trial, which resulted in the development of advanced Down syndrome screening programmes nationally. He returned to Ireland in 2005 when he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, based at the Rotunda Hospital. Since returning to Ireland, Professor Malone has been awarded almost €4 million to lead the Perinatal Ireland obstetric research consortium.

Professor Malone’s clinical interests focus purely on obstetric care. He provides advanced obstetric ultrasound and all forms of prenatal diagnostic services, including amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), fetal blood sampling and fetal treatment procedures, such as fetal transfusions. One of his special areas of interest is the development of screening programmes for fetal problems, such as Down syndrome, using early nuchal translucency ultrasound combined with maternal blood tests. Additionally, he specialises in the management of multiple gestations, including the treatment of complicated twin pregnancies.

He is married, and has four daughters.
