Dr. Bridgette Byrne qualified from University College Dublin in 1986. Following initial training in general medicine and then Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Dublin, she moved to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where she trained in maternal medicine. The research for her MD thesis involving the regulation of fetoplacental blood flow was performed at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada.
She returned to the Coombe Women’s Hospital to complete her clinical training and was appointed as senior lecturer and consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2002. Her special interests are in fetal medicine, severe maternal morbidity and multiple pregnancies. Her research interests include fetal trafficking and the regulation of maternal and fetal blood flow in intrauterine growth restriction and preeclampsia.
She has been involved in the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland, having been convenor of meetings and honorary secretary and currently sits on the subcommittee that has formulated a blueprint for the development of the specialty of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Ireland over the next ten years.
