  Undergraduate : Future Students

The ethos of the RCSI School of Medicine is founded on the principle that the patient’s interest is paramount in clinical teaching, medical practice and research. The curriculum is designed to give the student a sound knowledge of the principles of both the science and the art of medicine. A spirit of enquiry is also fostered and students are encouraged to carry out research in the academic departments of the College during the summer vacations. The student is exposed to a variety of specialties and encouraged to develop a balanced perspective of domiciliary, community and hospital-based care. The clinical teaching facilities provided by the College combined with the expertise and dedication of the clinical teachers, ensure that students receive training of the highest standard.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RCSI adheres to this ethos and ensures that the student exposure to patients is maximized. This is achieved by designing intensive clinical teaching attachments, both at Dublin’s renowned free-standing maternity hospitals, and at selected regional medical centres outside of Dublin. The RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is unique in that it has clinical access, with appropriate teaching staff, at all three Dublin maternity hospitals: The Rotunda Hospital (established 1745), Coombe Women’s Hospital (established 1826), and The National Maternity Hospital at Holles Street (established 1894). Students also rotate to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, St. Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny, and Waterford Regional Hospital. Additional student rotations occur at select major Dublin general hospitals, including Beaumont Hospital and Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown.

Department staff includes expert subspecialists in all areas of Women’s Health, including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynaecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology / Infertility, Urogynaecology, Minimal Access Surgery, and Menopause. With this depth of expertise, the Department offers a tremendous resource for future students who are considering their options for core medical school training as well as for elective rotations.
