Welcome to the RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. As physicians in training for a career in obstetrics and gynaecology you will find that this Department provides you with the resources necessary to advance all of your career goals. Frequent opportunities arise for specialist registrars and research fellows in the Department’s various clinical sites. You will have the benefit of being exposed to national leaders and innovators in this specialty and we hope that you will use these resources to maximise your skills and continued professional development.
The RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology aims to become a world leader in clinical research in this specialty. A core principle of the Department is to harness the resources of our staff and hospitals through collaborative research networks in order to answer the clinical dilemmas that contribute to maternal and paediatric disease. As evidence of the Department’s commitment in this regard is the new all-Ireland research network, Perinatal Ireland, which has been funded by the Irish Health Research Board to help maximize the health and well-being of mothers and their babies worldwide.
Perinatal Ireland is a collaborative consortium of eight of the largest obstetric medical centres on the island of Ireland, and led by Professor Fergal Malone at the RCSI Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, based at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. Funded by the Irish Health Research Board, advanced imaging equipment and dedicated research personnel have been resourced for each of the participating clinical centres. These centres have access to over 45,000 pregnancies per year and therefore provide an invaluable resource for new and experienced researchers both in women’s health care, but also in a wide range of other medical specialties. Specialist registrars and other researchers working for the Department will have full access to this clinical resource, which is an ideal opportunity for MD and PhD proposals.
As the largest academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ireland, RCSI staff members have the resources to provide you with exposure to the full range of obstetric and gynaecologic subspecialties for clinical training. Opportunities for subspecialty training include maternal and fetal medicine, including the full range of advanced obstetric diagnostic and fetal therapeutic procedures, advanced gynaecologic endoscopy, urogynaecology, gynaecologic oncology, and reproductive medicine.
Should you have any questions regarding the diverse subspecialty training opportunities in obstetrics and gynaecology, feel free to contact the Department’s head office at the RCSI Fetal Medicine Centre at the Rotunda Hospital.
